Welcome back! Recently in the studio we had a rather rare sight, a 2006 Ford Mustang GT, imported to the UK from Texas, USA.
During the initial paint inspection with the client we noticed many areas of neglect. Most noticeable a panel plagued with sanding marks. Not only was there obvious poor technique but the job wasn’t even finished! We can only hope this was an attempt by a previous owner and not a “professional”. As for the rest of the paintwork, heavy swirling and oxidisation was leaving the paint lifeless.
We started with a coat of AutoFoam to cleanse all the hard to reach areas, which as you can see are rarely reached (if ever)
With all these areas deeply cleansed we blanked the entire vehicle with CarPro Reset Intensive Cleaning Shampoo and washed the paintwork via the two bucket method (2BM) with a high pile merino wool wash mitt
Moving onto our three-stage decontamination we applied Iron X which gets to work breaking down non ferrous metal particles bonded with paint such as brake particles and industrial fallout this product turns red as it reacts with the bonded particles turning them into a water soluble solution that can be freely rinsed away, then Tar X which dissolves road tar and tree sap and finally a clay bar treatment which picks up any remaining bonded contaminants safely into the clay to ensure the vehicle is totally free of any foreign contaminants.
With the paint clean and the sun beating down we can get an idea of the task ahead.
Now moved inside the vehicle is thoroughly dried using direct warmed air to not interferer with the later polishing stage. We also removed certain trims to allow better access to tricky areas to ensure the best result. The wheels were also removed and sent away to The Wheel Specialist to be refurbished.
We now wiped over the entire vehicle with Koch-Chemie Panel Wipe, this will remove any masking oils on the paint so we can get a full understanding of the paint condition. Moving panel by panel we inspect the condition under our powerful sun gun inspection light as well as take paint thickness readings, these are all logged so we can plan our attack and are aware of any low areas of paint. As you can see we have a full array of paint defects including heavy swirls, sanding marks, holograms and oxidisation. We also had a reading of 80 microns on front fender, this is incredible low, we will have to adjust our level of cut over this section to not compromise the clear coat.
We equipped our Rupes Bigfoot LHR21 and Bigfoot Mini 12 with a microfibre pad and Koch-Chemie H8 heavy cut compound as our weapons of choice to cut back the paint. We had to step up to a heavy cut low profile wool pad over the rear quarter panel to fully remove the sanding marks.
Now with a much more respectable paint finish it was time to refine. After playing around with a few combinations we found the Bigfoot LHR15 teamed with a Hex-Logic finishing pad and Koch-Chemie M2 Anti Hologram polish was producing the best finish, a lovely deep straight black gloss.
A final wipe down with Koch-Chemie Panel Wipe to ensure a true finish that isn’t influenced by any oils and its time to move onto the protection stages. The wheels arrived back from the Wheel Specialist and were coated with CarPro DLUX, a highly chemical and heat resistant coating with high durability that makes wheel maintenance a breeze.
With our Koch-Chemie accreditation Koch-Chemie 1K Nano was the selected paintwork protection product. 1K Nano provides solid protection from the elements, strong acids and UV damage. Not only is the surface less susceptible to scratching it is also incredibly easy to maintain.
All glass surfaces are coated with Koch-Chemie Nano Glass Sealant this will expel water from the windscreen through airflow, vastly improving visibility in wet condition with durability up to 15,000 miles. The Texas sun had also taken its toll on the plastics, these were restored to a natural finish with Koch-Chemie Nano Magic Plastic Care which also provides protection from future UV damage.
With all the finer details addressed they all come together to complement the newly restored paint. A truly stunning finish that does this American muscle car the justice it deserves.
It wasn’t without its labours but the final finish makes it all worth while and another extremely satisfied customer!
