In The Studio – BMW 330d

Hi Guys,

Apologies for our lack of content recently. A super busy time in the studio has attracted our full attention.

Recently in the studio we had this BMW 330d in the stunning Estoril Blue with the gloss black Msport styling pack. The contrast between the Estoril Blue and gloss black Msport styling pack gives this Beemer an awesome aggressive sporty appearance. Time to work our magic!

As ever during our initial consultation with the client we assessed the paint to find little to no swirl marks or deep scratches. Some large patches of bird etching on the roof were brought to my attention, also under our high intensity inspection light we found a small patch of sanding mark on the drivers door. Apart from that the paint was in pretty good condition although more gloss can always be found.

We started by tidying up the engine bay. Koch-Chemie Green Star Degreaser was liberally sprayed throughout the bay, this was left for a minute to break down any grease and oil deposits before being agitated with brush then rinsed away at low pressure.

We then moved onto the pre wash stages on the paintwork. Koch-Chemie Bug & Dirt remover was sprayed around the lower half at the vehicle. This is perfect to dissolve bugs on the front bumper and also get to work breaking down dirt and grease on the lower panels. This was then rinsed away at high pressure working methodically across the panels.

Up next we tackle the wheels. Initially the wheels are sprayed with Koch-Chemie Reactive Wheel Cleaner, this turns purple as it reacts with the bonded break dust on the wheel surface turning into a water soluble solution that is then agitated and rinsed away, leaving a perfectly clean wheel. The wheel arch and tyre are also cleaned with Green Star Degreaser and dedicated brushes.

The entire vehicle is then blanketed with AutoFoam to further break down any loose grime. Badges, door shuts and tight cervices are also agitated at this point to allow the foam to carry away any trapped dirt. After another rinse at high pressure the pre wash stage is now complete and we are satisfied that any large particles of dirt have been removed and won’t inflict any damage during the hand wash process.

The vehicle is now washed via the two bucket method (2BM) one wash bucket filled with clean water and CarPro Reset, a Ph Neutral shampoo with an intensive cleaning action, perfect for removing oils from the paintwork, and another rinse bucket filled with clean water for rinsing our lambswool wash mitt.

To complete the wash and decontamination stage Tar X and Iron X are respectively applied to dissolve any iron and tar particles that have adhered to the paintwork, these are then agitated with a plush microfibre before being rinsed at high pressure.

Now moved into our studio, the entire vehicle is dried with plush microfibre towels and hot air to blow water from crevices so not to interfere with the later polishing stages.

Although a thorough chemical decontamination has been completed, we perform a clay bar treatment to ensure any remaining stubborn contaminants are removed. leaving the paintwork perfectly clean.

Now under our purpose built high intensity lighting in our detailing studio we can get a good understanding of the condition of the paintwork revealing the bird etching on the roof that the client had previously brought to our attention as well as some localised sanding marks on the driver door and along the retrofitted spoiler.

These were rectified through spot correction using our Rupes Mini fitted with a coarse rupes cutting pad and Koch-Chemie H8o2 Heavy-Cut Compound.

Now with these more serious defects successfully removed we continued with our single stage polish included with our Level 1 – Protection Detail. Our Rupes Bigfoot and Rupes Mini being our weapons of choice armed with medium cutting pads and Koch-Chemie Micro Cut compound, this combination was perfect to remove light marring on hard BMW paint whilst increasing the gloss and providing a perfect base for the later protection application.

The entire vehicle was dusted and wiped down with CarPro Eraser to remove any polishing oils so not to interfere with the protection process. Koch-Chemie 1K Nano, our standard protection product, will now be applied to every painted surface via DA machine to ensure an even and complete coat. Koch-Chemie 1K Nano is a polymer sealant with excellent chemical and scratch resistance. The ultra slick surface becomes incredibly easy to maintain. 1K protects your paint in excess of 1 year. The performance can be boosted and gloss increased even further when maintained with Koch-Chemie Nano Magic Shampoo.

Now with 1K Nano curing we addressed the wheels, glass, trim and interior. The wheels were treated with Polish Angel Supersport a high durability spray wax containing PTFE making wheel maintenance much easier. The glass was treated with Koch-Chemie Nano Glass Sealant, this will expel water from the glass through airflow making visibility in rain far superior with durability up to 15,000 miles. Plastics were treated with Koch-Chemie Nano Magic to restore the colour and protect from fading. The exhaust tips were polished to a high shine and sealed with a high temp resistant sealant.

Prior to collection the vehicle was wiped down with Koch-Chemie All Round Quick Shine to remove any dust and finger prints leaving a an incredibly glossy finish.

  1. I’m curious as to the engine bay treatment. Does your treatment remove the factory protection wax.

    • Hi David,

We are precise and careful where we apply both chemicals and high pressure water within the engine bay. Any excess wax or grease is safely removed. Amy delicate areas such as electrical components, intakes etc are either masked or avoided. More sensitive engines found on classic and high performance models are cleaned via steam.
